Adoption Stats

Adoption is deeply ingrained in the fabric of today's modern family. Here are some interesting stats:

  • Did you know that about 1/3 of all Americans are touched by adoption within their immediate families?
  • Did you know that each year, there are approximately 127,000 children who are adopted through private adoption, foster care, stepparent adoption and international adoption?

While adoption today is transforming our country into a multicultural and multiethnic society, adoption is still misunderstood and often surrounded by myths and stereotypes. Adoption makes for good drama and gossip and is inadvertently covered with negativity by the news or entertainment media, further perpetuating these myths and stereotypes.

How do we change this? It is time that people understand the adoption process, use more accurate language (please look at my blog on accurate adoption language) and approach adoption from a more balanced perspective.

What are your thoughts and feelings on adoption?
